Overview

The Department of Asian History allows students to gain an understanding of the diverse value systems that exist in the Asian and Islamic worlds by interpreting their politics, economies, societies, cultures, and international relations from a historical perspective. We seek to logically observe and shed light on unique subject matter related to these regions by analyzing academic research and primary sources.

An interest in the Asian and the Islamic worlds and their histories can lead to many different career paths. Many students use the foreign language skills they develop here to open up international careers and make contributions in fields related to international exchange.

Within the Department of Asian History, there are five full-time faculty who specialize in the Middle East and the Islamic world as well as East Asia. But there are many other courses available to students, who can specialize in any era of their choosing, including ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary eras.
