7. Andrea Alciati, Emblemata
This
edition with a beautiful engraved title-page [1],
first published by P.P. Tozzi of Padova in 1621, is what one
may call the 'Variorum' edition of Alciato, containing commentaries
by Claude Mignault and Lorenzo Pignoria (1571-1631), a Paduan
classicist. In the Preface, Pignoria criticised the inaccuracy
of classical references in the earlier edition of Alciato, leading
Tozzi to revise illustrations in the 1618 edition.
The 1661 edition is
the reprint of the 1621 while most of the woodcuts go back to the 1618 edition.
